They say old habits are hard to break… That’s why, as much as you try to question your motives after doing something against your self-interest, you can’t pull yourself out. 

As you get sucked into that vortex, you become susceptible to making the same mistakes over and over again. It can get tiring and frustrating, and you will most definitely end up beating yourself for it. 

So why do you do it? Why do you have to keep putting yourself through that horrible experience?

Psychologists and researchers have been trying to find the answers. Here are some of their proposed explanations:

Established neural pathways

Habits take time to develop. But, once they become an official part of your system, your brain creates a neural pathway for each task, allowing you to switch into  “auto-pilot” mode where you perform the behavior without thinking about it. 

For example, suppose you have developed this urge to wash your hands every time you head out to get groceries during the first few months of the pandemic. In that case, you might have begun to incorporate this behavior into your system without consciously thinking about it. 

That’s why until today, you find yourself heading straight to the sink to wash your hands each time you get home.

Feeling stressed out or bored

We all have different coping mechanisms. Unfortunately, some people find themselves engaging in all sorts of unpleasant and sometimes destructive habits like biting the nails, drinking alcohol, or smoking. 

Some even go on a binge eating fest, consuming a ton of fat-laden, sugary, and sodium-rich food products and convincing themselves that “Hey! it’s okay, you won’t do it again. Right?”. A day later, they’re back on the same chair, eating the same types of food and saying the same excuse.  

The thing is, you don’t have to resort to these behaviors or practices. You can find more productive ways to entertain yourself or cope with stress. 

For example, you can engage in a rigorous exercise routine. This way, you can stimulate the release of endorphins, a neurotransmitter used for relieving pain and providing that “feel good” sensation to your mind and body. 

Besides exercising, you can turn to hobbies like cooking healthy meals to ease your weary mind. You can even join yoga sessions, go on a walk,  or drive to the mall for quick window shopping.

It took years for your repeated behavior to turn into a permanent part of your unconscious thinking. That’s why, if you want to learn how to undo these habits, you will need to rewire your brain and start introducing new and better practices.

To do so, I recommend looking at the benefits you often get whenever you go to behavior like drinking alcohol or emotional eating. Then, find an activity that can provide you with a similar effect. 

For example, if you tend to grab a cookie or some chips each time you feel frustrated or stressed, I suggest taking a time out and drinking some water and maybe go for a walk or call a friend instead until you release pent-up anger and energy.
